This project included additions and renovations to an existing facility occupied by the Center for Battered Women, now known as SafePlace in Austin Texas. The family shelter provides emergency, safe housing for women and children who are victims of abuse. The primary project goal was to improve the privacy and sense of community for each resident. The building had served as an administrative facility and was renovated to provide seven semi-private bedrooms and two handicapped-accessible bedrooms and bathrooms. The renovations also included a manager's apartment and administrative support spaces. New structures for laundry and storage were also added. The outdoor areas include a small garden patio, trellis-covered areas, and improved landscaping. Architectural services responded to a non-traditional construction process. Work was completed through donations of labor and materials by local contractors, and minimal funding. |
